Tucked between the pages of Scripture is a story about a woman whose name rarely comes up in conversation. Yet during one of the most critical spiritual moments in Judah’s history, when leaders needed to hear from God — they went to her. Ever heard of Huldah? Her story appears in 2 Kings 22.

Huldah lived quietly in Jerusalem, in the Second Quarter of the city, not the prestigious side. She was a prophetess, yes, but also simply a wife. Her husband Shallum held a steady, respectable government position — keeper of the royal wardrobe. Think of her as the woman married to a mid-level civil servant. Not wealthy. Not famous. Not sitting on a platform. When the nation of Judah had long drifted from God — idolatry spreading, His Word forgotten, worship corrupted — she kept living right where God had placed her.

And then King Josiah found the lost Book of the Law during temple repairs, heard it read aloud, and tore his robes. He was undone. The nation had missed God entirely. So he gave one urgent command: “Go and inquire of the Lord.” His officials obeyed — and when they had to choose who to seek, they bypassed other prophets who were active and prominent at the time. They came to Huldah.

So, what was it about Huldah’s life that made her the one they turned to? What kind of life produces this level of trust?

A mature one. A life lived faithfully before God — not for recognition, but because that was simply who she was.

When we think about spiritual growth, we often imagine visible change — breakthroughs, leadership, public influence. But Scripture suggests that much of the growth God values develops in hidden places, long before anyone else recognizes it.

“He also said, ‘This is what the kingdom of God is like. A man scatters seed on the ground. Night and day, whether he sleeps or gets up, the seed sprouts and grows, though he does not know how. All by itself the soil produces grain — first the stalk, then the head, then the full kernel in the head.’” Mark 4:26–28 NIV

The Moment That Revealed Huldah’s Growth

In a moment that mattered, leaders sought her voice to discern the will of God. Her authority was not sudden. Scripture shows us the moment, but not the years God was preparing her for it.

The Kind of Growth Huldah Displayed:

1. Faithfulness to God’s Word

When Huldah spoke, she did not soften or alter the message. She faithfully delivered both warning and hope — and God entrusted her with it. (2 Kings 22:15)

2. Courage to Speak Truth

Her message included judgment against the nation. Yet she delivered it faithfully. (2 Kings 22:16–17)

3. Spiritual Discernment

She understood the seriousness of the situation and the condition of the nation. Discernment like that is not formed in a moment. It grows through an ongoing life with God — speaking with Him, seeking His heart, learning to see through the lens of His Word. It is in that place of relationship that understanding is formed. (2 Kings 22:18–19, Hebrews 5:14)

4. Humility and Obedience

Notice something important. The text never presents Huldah drawing attention to herself. She simply communicated the message of the Lord. True spiritual authority is God-centered, not self-centered — marked by humility and simple obedience. (2 Kings 22:14–15, Micah 6:8)

God entrusted Huldah with national guidance. Her message influenced reform, helping turn the people back to God. She was not placed there by chance — she was positioned because her character had already been formed in hidden places. God honors that kind of growth by entrusting it with responsibility.

That same kind of growth still exists today. Faithfulness practiced in everyday life. Often unseen — especially in the lives of women. But never unnoticed by God. Like Huldah, it is the kind of growth that carries weight when it matters.

Take a moment to reflect. Where has growth been taking place in your life? In the small choices, in the unseen moments, in the ways you have responded differently than before. Do not overlook it. What feels ordinary to you may be the very work God has been doing within you. Remain faithful. What is being shaped now will carry weight in time.

And who knows — perhaps God has a specific assignment waiting for you, just as He had for Huldah. But even if the moment never comes with a title or a stage, nothing is wasted. Not every woman is called to a public moment, and none of us are called to one all the time. What matters is that God sees. And He rejoices in the growth happening right where you are.

“But whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”

John 4:14 (NIV)
